Making Lunch Fun, One Box at a Time

ben·tol·o·gy (ben t äləjē) Noun : The study of making nutritious and fun lunches for my daughters.

I get a lot of inspiration from other blogs. So, in hopes someone might get some inspiration from me, I've decided to post some pictures here.

This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.Proverbs 3:7-9

Puppies for the Author Visit

Tomorrow, the girls' school is hosting a visit from the author Sandra Phillipson. In preparation for the visit, the whole school has learned about the author, read her books, made artwork and other various projects. Many of the main characters in her books are dogs. In fact, 2 of her dogs are coming with her tomorrow. The girls are VERY excited! So, in celebration of her visit, I made doggie bentos:

  • 2 bone-shaped sandwiches with fruit leather hearts

  • Cheddar "Scottie dogs"

  • Carrots with ranch

  • Strawberry slices with blueberries on puppy picks

  • Dog bone-shaped graham cracker sticks.

*Ok, I know my "web" looks more like a snowflake but hopefully in context they will know it's a web. On the bright side, I'll have to remember the snowflake idea come January!

Candy Corn Lunch

Hopefully the girls will enjoy this sweet treat lunch:

  • 2 candy corn-shaped sandwiches (stacked). The "candy corn" on top is made from a piece of provolone that I colored yellow with a food safe marker and then put a strip of cheddar in the center for the yellow/orange/white effect.

  • Carrots with ranch

  • Red and green grapes with a "Happy Halloween" pick

  • Candy corn (of course!!)

It's Haley's turn to eat lunch with the principal. She's a dog fan so we made her a puppy theme lunch.

  • 2 ham and cheddar puppy-shaped sandwiches

  • Carrots with ranch (in a puppy cup)

  • Red and Green grapes with puppy picks

  • Hershey Kisses

Going Batty!

  • 2 circle sandwiches (H has ham and cheddar and A has PB&J) with a bat pick. (If you look closely, you might see that I used a Wilton Cookie Stamp of a bat on the top of the sandwich, but I didn't think it showed up well enough (it's actually more visible in the picture than it is in real life))

  • Salad (H has a regular garden salad and A has a spinach salad) with orange tomatoes and Italian salad dressing. I carved one tomato to look like a jack-o-lantern.

  • Strawberry slices with blueberries on bat picks.

  • Pretzel snaps

  • String cheese

Jolly Jack-O-Lanterns

Normally, the girls have identical lunches, except for the type of sandwich. But, these lunches ended up a little different so I thought I'd post a picture of both.

H's Lunch:

  • Turkey and cheddar on whole wheat. She has a cheddar jack-o-lantern accented with brown crust for the stem and a leaf pick

  • Cucumber and orange tomato kabobs on pumpkin picks with ranch

  • Strawberries with a pumpkin pick (H doesn't like clementines)

  • Candy pumpkins

A's Lunch:

  • Ave isn't a fan of large pieces of cheese on her sandwich so instead of doing the cheddar pumpkin, I just used the cut-outs from H's sandwich to decorate Ave's sandwich. I also decorated hers with brown crust for the stem and a leaf pick.

  • A Clementine jack-o-lantern

  • Cucumber and orange tomatoes on a pumpkin pick

  • Candy pumpkins

This girls have a new principal at their school this year. She spends almost every lunch period in the cafeteria interacting with the kids (which I love). Almost every day she checks out the girls lunches and comments that she wishes I'd make her one too. I assumed she was kidding but I ran into her the other day and she mentioned it to me. So, we made plans for her to have a bento lunch with the girls. I hope she likes it!

  • 2 ham and cheese pencil sandwiches with a marshmallow eraser.

  • Carrot and celery sticks with ranch and a "school" themed pick
